An investment earspeaker for riding and general use, the ER 6 combines superior response accuracy and high external noise isolation with an affordable price. I have attempted to use many different audio combinations under my Shoei full face helmet while cruising on my Honda Shadow.

Finally....the ER 6 set arrived. The clarity and quality of the sound and blocking of ambient noise puts this item in a class of its own.

I use in the ear canal hearing aids and can replace them with these earspeakers directly. In fact, for safety I am able to only insert the right ear plug and thus still be able to hear much of the ambient noise out of my other ear.

And to my surprise, even with only one ear speaker in, the music comes thru clearly and I can enjoy it at speeds of 70 mph on USA expressways with NO PROBLEM!!

Now I'm trying to determine the best audio device to hook to the ER 6 that can be carried in my jacket pocket. I have a small am/fm radio which works OK within reasonable range of the station, but fades out much sooner than the same radio in my car. I've ordered a sound booster from you this week to go with my IPOD Nano to see if that device might work better.

The ER6 ear buds are indeed the best "ear speakers" I've used, although they are a bit expensive and it is dubious to call them an investment. I use mine while traveling by air and they do isolate surrounding sound and provide a very pleasant audio atmosphere in which to endure commercial travel. However, for motorcycle use, they have dissadvantages such as: comfort while wearing a full faced helmet, less than desired wind noise suppression and the futz factor of having to seat them properly in your ear before riding. I've also found that some users crank up the volume trying to hear their music while traveling at speed, which most reports say is damaging to the ear.

High audio fidelity while traveling on a motorcycle is difficult to obtain unless you are traveling behind a lagre windscreen. There are better alternatives when considering wind noise and sound.

My personal preference is to use a very good quality soft ear plug (Hearos) and a helmet speaker. It is less fatiguing, offers better hearing protection, less futz factor and allows you to hear your GPS directions or radar dectector. Fidelity? Well, it's less than desired but well within expectations.

I'd recommend the ER6 but would suggest you try the ER6i, which is the same internals as the ER6 but requires less drive to achieve the same sound output. -Gene McCalmont Monday, May 5, 2008

My Arai Corsair is the only helmet that gets enough air in my hair to survive West Texas summers with full face protection. But all those vents create a lot of wind noise. I needed an earplug that would cut wind noise, deliver decent sound, and stay put in my ear while pulling on the helmet. I really wonder why anyone would be criticizing these over sound delivery. I've tried them all and these are the ones for me. Besides my Airhawk, no other piece of equipment is more essential for the long rides. My right ear gets a little sore after 4-5 hours, but just I minor gripe. Looooong history of trying to solve the earplug/music/radar/coomunication issue. In short (for the recieving end) the ER 6 from Etymotic are great. Don't fit you say? Three sizes of silicone earbuds and one set of foam buds should fit 99% of the people out there. If you can wear earplugs, you can where these.
*Sound quality is awesome!
*Mozart at speed!
*All windnoise gone, and I mean all. I am wondering if this is too quiet???
*Comfort. They do take getting used having in your ear. They do take a couple extra seconds to install/remove from your ears.
If you want great sound quality and roadnoise cancellation these are your final solution.

Sorry, can't recommend. Unfortunately, I didn't have the success that others seem to have had. Found the plugs uncomfortable under the helmet: could not wear an hour on a long distance ride. Cord clip works well, but they seem too fragile. Helas... -Keith Taylor Monday, May 5, 2008

I have been having all sorts of problems trying to sort out listening to music while riding. I tried helmet
mounted speakers (not loud enough, miserable sound quality. I then tried some Koss Earbuds (way too bassy,
not enough sound deadening even with the earplug modification, also not comfortable enough at all). I went
further and tried the Sony Fontopias (no joy here either. simply nowhere near enough sound dampening).

I had no desire to spend $100 on a set of earbuds. Hell, I freely admit it: I am a cheap bastage. I don't
like spending money frivolously. I look for sales & coupons. I internet shop like a madman. $100 was too
much in my mind.

I broke down an said "fug it". Others said they worked great. I read no less than 25 online reviews about
them (all raves). I was pretty much at my wits end. I wanted excellent sound deadening coupled with very
good sound quality.

Plain and simple: the ER6's flat out blow away the Koss & Sony earbuds. There is absolutely no comparison
in terms of sound quality. The ER6's sound fantastic. Treble notes are crystal clear. Bass notes are
smooth. From a sound quality perspective only, they simply are awesome.

From a sound deadening perspective - Well, I finally found what I was looking for. The basic silicon bud
blocks out a solid 20-25 db's. I had no issues whatsoever with helmet noise at all even up to 100mph. The
music piped in perfectly cleanly and windnoise was held completely at bay.

There are those who have written that sound quality isn't that important since you lose so much because of
windnoise. Trust me, you needn't suffer anymore. the sound quality is there, 100%, and the wind doesn't
seem to change that.

$100 is a lot of money.

They are most definitely worth it.

In a word: wow.

In several words "This changes everything".

These earphones are a good solution to reducing wind noise and acheiving good quality sound at the same time. They work well under a helmet. I use them under an HJC flip-up helmet, which is very loud, and they cut about 75% of the wind noise, which is plenty to be able to hear well without turning up the music so loud you hurt your eardrums. I also use them in the gym, doing chores like mowing the lawn. They are great for those applications too if trying to justify the investment. The sound quality is a solid "good". I didn't experience what other reviewers perceive as almost live music sound quality. I use with my portable XM player and will not go back to conventional earphones/headphones.

The earphones can be somewhat uncomfortable in the ear after extended use (2+ hours). I'm not sure why, but the outside of my ear under my helmet actually begins to hurt (maybe it's not the earphone?) anyway, I gave the item a "4" rating, but overall, they are very good and worth the price.
