Best pants I have ever ownedReview by Kiley
I bought these pants after digging around through reviews for a month looking for the perfect pair. I ride a dual sport and do lots of back woods and street riding and wanted something to fill both roles. I am a long time owner of an original 'Stich Roadcrafter and trust the gear but it is hot for trail work. I have to say, the moment I put on these pants I knew I had made the right choice. The fit is a lot like a pair of jeans. I bought them one size up from my jeans size to be able to layer and it was the perfect choice. With the included belt they easily fit over nothing but gym shorts. The material is tough! I put them through a weekend of exploring the trails in Kentucky and they are waterproof to a tee after riding through heavy rain. They cinched down tightly around my Gaerne boots with shin plates and even making numerous creek crossings my legs and feet stayed dry as a bone. They are COMFORTABLE in fit and did well in temps from 35-70°. Absolutely love these pants and now am considering a matching Darien jacket. Aerostich rocks and the AD-1s may be my perfect pant! Very Comfortable PantReview by Rabid Rover
Fifth pair of riding pants I have owned and easily the most comfortable. Great addition to my Darien Light jacket. Definitely like the cut of the AD1 pants over the Darien pants ... thanks Jim @ Adventure Rider Radio for the recommendation! (Posted on 3/22/17)
Love AD1Review by Patricia
These pants are so comfortable even before they are broken in. I wore them in 60+ degree and they are great. Can't wait to get caught in the rain. I like that I can wear what's ever required underneath. (Posted on 2/19/17)
AD1 LightsReview by James
These are nice pants. The fabric is unbelievably tough and stiff. I can't imagine what the regular AD1's feel like. I wore them on a 100 mile ride with temps in the mid 40s over a pair of light sweat pants. No cold air infiltrated and the combo was very comfortable. The way the knees are designed makes sitting on the bike effortless. No tight spots at all. I have not worn them in the rain yet but so far they are definitely going to be my go to pants for touring and day trips. (Posted on 2/6/17)
Well ConstructedReview by Ron
I purchased the pants as I plan on doing a long ride in 2017, Wilmington DE to Denver. I haven't used them yet as it's a little chillie, (29 F). I will say that they are well made. I'm really impressed with the construction and the extra features. I'm looking forward to actually wearing them. (Posted on 1/3/17)
Lighter Weight, Still Plenty ToughReview by Bruce
I wanted riding pants that were a little lighter than my Dariens for hot weather riding, and the AD1 Lights looked like just the ticket. Aerostich was offering them with the hip armour included free of charge and a 10% discount for Canadian customers, due to the battered and devalued Canadian dollar. I couldn't resist the offer, and have had them now for a couple of weeks. I am very pleased with the way they fit and feel. Although they are appreciably lighter in weight than my Dariens, I do not feel that safety has been compromised at all. They are still heavy enough to offer excellent protection, especially with armour installed. These pants seem like a winner to me. (Posted on 8/10/15)
Simple, functional, perfect.Review by Errol Smith
Made in America, Goretex, under $500...what more do you want? How about excellent customer service? I bought these right before the free hip pads deal and called Aerostich up to see if they'd extend the deal to me. Without a moment's hesitation, they had them in a box and out the door to me. I was floored! What an amazing product from an equally amazing company! (Posted on 6/20/15)
NOT made in USAReview by Dennis M
I got an email telling me these pants were in stock, ready for immediate shipment including the hip armor. I come to find out that my size is NOT in stock and the entire shipment is made in Vietnam, A lot is made of Aerostitch's items being made in the USA, not Vietnam, the price does not go down for the Made in Vietnam items. These are expensive pants and now they are expensive Vietnamese pants. Come on, full disclosure always. (Posted on 6/17/15)
Tough pantsReview by Michael
My knuckles are scraped raw making simple adjustments. Ride a BMW 1200 RT. Wear BMW gear and looked at Klim. All made in China or Indonesia. Live in California, may move due to combined state and fed tax rate of 60%, but it is warm here. Read many reviews. Ordered AD1 light pants after ordering Darien jacket. Could not imagine pants this good! Can't wait to put them on in the morning. God likes these pants. It rained 2 straight days after the day they arrived. They handled brilliantly. Changed my jacket to a Darian light even though there is an additional 5 week wait. Very tough pants with the $45.00 hip pad. Give this USA manufacture your support.

Gear: Fashion and Style vs. Equipment

There’s a lot of ‘noise’ in the rider-gear market space the Aerostich Darien jacket occupies, about how ‘new and improved’ similar jackets are. Other companies making these kinds of jackets restyle them and revise them every year or two, telling riders that if three zippers is good, six or seven zippers is better.

What all the ‘noise’ amounts to is fashion and style being presented in the guise of technology which supposedly is rapidly ever-advancing in this area. Except armored waterproof textile jackets are not the same kind of technology as computers, or even motorcycles. Seven zippers are not better than three, if only three are functionally needed. What counts is ease of use, durability, fit and function. The pioneering of this type of gear was done by us twenty and thirty years ago. (Combining lightweight breathable-waterproof highly abrasion-resistant synthetic fabrics, seam-sealing, ergonomically more useful vents and pockets, reflective materials and energy-absorbing foams and plastics.)

Since then, just like added decorative stitching on branded ‘designer’ jeans turns a pair of useful, comfortable and durable work pants like Levi’s 501’s into a fashion, all the noise about new tech in jackets like the Darien is mostly fashion BS masquerading as technological improvements. It’s not real.

Classic black leather ‘zipper’ biker jackets have been popular world-wide for many decades. There are versions at many price points and in some circles this jacket has become a fashion cliché having little to do with actually riding a motorcycle. But for many riders it remains a great equipment choice that has changed only very slightly over the years — because it works so well. You’ll find the original versions of these jackets at Langlitz, Shott and several other pioneering leather companies. Similarly, you’ll find the original British waxed cotton Belstaff and Barbour rider’s jackets and pants still being produced in their original patterns because they remain excellent functional rider’s gear.

The ‘latest-greatest’ is usually more style and fashion based, and original equipment is nearly always more utility-tool based. It does not change from year to year any more than Levi’s 501’s. Many riders are unlikely to admit they are buying ever-changing fashion and style when they believe they are getting some kind of improved technology, but that is a truth. None of the regularly restyled ‘teched-out’ sportswear for riders comes in as many closely-spaced sizes as the Darien does, and none is as functional and equipment-y as a Darien.

The Aerostich Darien is the original advanced technology breathable-waterproof impact-armored synthetic (nylon) textile rider’s gear, and just like the above-mentioned other examples of specialized rider’s clothing, it is similarly more equipment than fashion. For historical reasons.

Dariens are available ‘off-the-rack’ in eleven closely-spaced graded sizes and six colors. Complete repair service and several optional fit alterations insure years of superior service.

Lightweight Gear: General Protection Considerations

Naturally, you want any crash outcome with as little injury as possible. If your garment is destroyed in the process, fine. Like a spent car airbag or crumplable auto-body sacrifices itself. Many experienced riders feel it's better to have something lighter and more comfortably everyday-wearable, even if it means replacing or repairing the garment after experiencing a significant incident.

Aerostich lightweight gear is intended to provide ‘just enough’ for whatever kind of accident scenario can be reasonably foreseen. So there’s a double-layer seat on all suits and pants, and two layers everywhere else one might apply higher abrasion pressure during a spill. Beneath the elbow/shoulder/knee areas there’s also a curved plastic shell over the energy-absorbing impact material. All ‘light’ Aerostich gear also contain a hidden layer of tougher 500D Cordura, located just behind each armor section.

Still, ‘Lights’ are best for moderate speeds. Personally I am ok with them to about 65 mph, rationalizing I’d probably hit the pavement at less because of braking prior to crashing. For riders who spend a fair amount of time at 70 mph and above, which means a lot of freeway time, we still like 500D Cordura garments better. But also note we’ve received many reports about good outcomes after higher-speed crashes in 'Lights'…and zero reports they performed worse than expected. –Mr. Subjective, 2014
