I've worn these for a year in a variety of conditions ranging from torrential rain (12 hours of it) to near whiteout conditions in a blizzard.
The zippers may (as noted by others) be a concern but as an added caution I do not unzip mine past the shins. The darian zippers so far have yet to leak which is more than I can say for a very expensive pair of Rev'it pants (cost x2 of one pair of Darien) that failed within 6 months of purchase.
I wear these like over pants, so I unzip partially and pull off the rest of the way after the boots are off to preserve the zipper.
I expect i'll get at least a few more years of trouble free functionality out of them. The success of these pants has me thinking about getting the road crafter classic to match my classic jacket. <3 What you guys at Aerostich are doing keep it up!
P.S. Recently had low speed crash in the ice and snow, picked up my bike and kept on riding, no damage to the gear or bike. I didn't even feel the impact. (Posted on 1/6/17)

I never write reviews as most things you buy these days don't warrant it. I did however Purchase a pair of Darian pants this summer and wanted to let you know that other than my motorcycle (vstrom 1000) this is the best investment I have made to date. I ride to work rain or shine and the Darian's are in my opinion the perfect pant for both commuting and or trekking cross country. They are cool even in mid to high eighty temps and completely waterproof even in the most challenging conditions thanks to the Gortex fabric. The ease of putting on or removing is unparalleled because of the full length zippers. The protection of the rip stop curdora along with the build in knee protection provides another level of comfort while riding.
Wearing shorts underneath allow me to go from riding apparel to beach attire in seconds. I'm writing this testimonial after riding to work in a thunderstorm and being completely dry. The triple digit gloves didn't hurt either. Anyway this Canadian (Nova Scotia) just wanted to say thanks for a great piece of kit and let you know you have an Aerostich customer for life. I also spread the word to all my adventure riding friends who will be purchasing soon.

- I've had my Dariens for two years,I think. I have finally found what I don't like about them. The size of the belt loops is too small. The belt buckles will not pass through them. I am a "Fat Old Fart",charter member, and I need to ride with the belt buckle on the side. (Read F.O.F.)The buckle on the side can lead to a slow pit stop. Diet and exercise is not an option. I followed the Arostich sizing tool and was placed in 34 Regulars (I wear a 32x32 in jeans). I put about a 1000 miles on them this winter before I realized they just wouldn’t work for me.
Issue 1: The waist was gaping over just undershorts, and even after I added the hard shell hip pads still a little too loose. I gather they are meant to be worn as over-pants and not against the skin or over fleece liners.
Issue 2: They were too short. Seated in the saddle, the bottoms rode high, coming up over the top of my boots. Even after adjusting the height of the knee armor I couldn’t get them to ride lower.
Issue 3: Cold spots along the full length zippers that made winter riding uncomfortable, even wearing fleece liners.
So choose wisely when ordering.
All this being said, I really did like the way they are built and I’m going to try again with a different size. (Posted on 4/8/16)

- Add this review to the list of reviews praising the pants, but unhappy due to poor quality zippers. I've had my Darien pants for 2 years of relatively light use. After riding last weekend I noticed that the plastic fly zipper was broken. I called customer service, which informed me that they could replace the zipper for $75 plus shipping costs, and that they'd be able to get to them 4 to 6 weeks after they receive them! Really? I don't want to be without my riding pants for as long as 2 months and as much as $100, and they'd likely replace the zipper with yet another low quality zipper. It's surprising that this otherwise high quality product has such as low quality zipper. Finally, the indifference of the customer service rep I spoke with completely turned me off to any future with Aerostich. (Posted on 12/30/15)

- Generally good, but my pants are in need of “another” set of zippers. I wear these pants a lot, but the zippers are not durable. The fly zipper won’t stay up and the leg zippers are separating. I replace them once before, and I like the concept of being able to get gear repaired vs buying new, but $50 for a new fly zipper and $75 to replace each leg zippers means $200??? I found a local person that will replace the leg zippers for $15 for both! I’ll lose the two way zipper, but come on, I only zip them one way anyway. At $360 for the pants these zippers should last 10 years of constant use. (Posted on 9/2/15)

I had a pair of Darien pants for about a year. I use them for commuting and a ride from Minnesota to NYC. I found that someone broke into my locked luggage and stole my originals. These were good enough to order up the exact same pair again.
The fit of the pants is a little odd in that they are not cut like jeans. They are a tall cut. If I pull up the waist, it goes maybe an inch over my belly button. Not that this is a bad thing, just an observation. The leg length is good when I'm on my bike and they are roomy enough for jeans + long grundies when it's cold out. I like how utility and basic they are. The pads are easily adjustable. Sides zip completely from top to bottom, so you can just Chippendale them off rather than hop around on one foot trying to get your muddy boot through. (Posted on 10/28/14)

- I have a Roadcrafter one piece, but it's quite warm during the summer in Georgia in stop and go city traffic. As a supplement I purchased a pair of Darien pants and paired them with a Tourmaster Flex 3 four season jacket and wear the armored mesh piece with the pants. This is a great combination, with the ventilation of the jacket and the ability to leave the pants on when walking in to work, the mall, etc., to maintain ATGATT. When the temperatures cool down I will go back to my Hi-Viz one piece. The best of both worlds. (Posted on 7/26/14)

I recently bought a pair of Darian pants to replace my (badly) aging pair of Marsee Adventure Gear pants, which are no longer made. The Darians fit nicely over the same size jeans. The workmanship is top notch - very well sewn and sealed. They started out quite stiff, but they're beginning to loosen up a little. It has been quite cool (for California) with temperatures below freezing, and these have kept me quite comfortable at 75 mph on my daily commute on my naked (no fairings) motorcycle.
I look forward to replacing the jacket with a Darian jacket - the Aerostich quality is quite compelling. Good gear, well made here in the USA. Would definitely buy again.

Gear: Fashion and Style vs. Equipment
There’s a lot of ‘noise’ in the rider-gear market space the Aerostich Darien jacket occupies, about how ‘new and improved’ similar jackets are. Other companies making these kinds of jackets restyle them and revise them every year or two, telling riders that if three zippers is good, six or seven zippers is better.
What all the ‘noise’ amounts to is fashion and style being presented in the guise of technology which supposedly is rapidly ever-advancing in this area. Except armored waterproof textile jackets are not the same kind of technology as computers, or even motorcycles. Seven zippers are not better than three, if only three are functionally needed. What counts is ease of use, durability, fit and function. The pioneering of this type of gear was done by us twenty and thirty years ago. (Combining lightweight breathable-waterproof highly abrasion-resistant synthetic fabrics, seam-sealing, ergonomically more useful vents and pockets, reflective materials and energy-absorbing foams and plastics.)
Since then, just like added decorative stitching on branded ‘designer’ jeans turns a pair of useful, comfortable and durable work pants like Levi’s 501’s into a fashion, all the noise about new tech in jackets like the Darien is mostly fashion BS masquerading as technological improvements. It’s not real.
Classic black leather ‘zipper’ biker jackets have been popular world-wide for many decades. There are versions at many price points and in some circles this jacket has become a fashion cliché having little to do with actually riding a motorcycle. But for many riders it remains a great equipment choice that has changed only very slightly over the years — because it works so well. You’ll find the original versions of these jackets at Langlitz, Shott and several other pioneering leather companies. Similarly, you’ll find the original British waxed cotton Belstaff and Barbour rider’s jackets and pants still being produced in their original patterns because they remain excellent functional rider’s gear.
The ‘latest-greatest’ is usually more style and fashion based, and original equipment is nearly always more utility-tool based. It does not change from year to year any more than Levi’s 501’s. Many riders are unlikely to admit they are buying ever-changing fashion and style when they believe they are getting some kind of improved technology, but that is a truth. None of the regularly restyled ‘teched-out’ sportswear for riders comes in as many closely-spaced sizes as the Darien does, and none is as functional and equipment-y as a Darien.
The Aerostich Darien is the original advanced technology breathable-waterproof impact-armored synthetic (nylon) textile rider’s gear, and just like the above-mentioned other examples of specialized rider’s clothing, it is similarly more equipment than fashion. For historical reasons.

Which Pants? Darien vs. AD1 vs. Utility...Regular vs. Light
AD1 pants fit me a little better than Darien pants. Their rise is less, so the waistband rides a little lower, and it’s slightly curved, which I also like better. The AD1’s included belt is a 1.25" Aerostich money belt, versus the stronger 1.5" side-release-buckled belt on the Darien pants. And compared to the Darien pant the AD1’s knees are ‘bent’ a couple of degrees more, which is nice for bikes with a little more rear-positioned footrests. The radius of this bend is a little bigger, too, so there is a bit more space for knee pads. Darien pants fit and feel a lot like Khaki's or regular pants and AD1's fit and feel a little more like jeans.
Up to about 70ºf I wear my AD1 Lights over regular jeans or khaki pants. When it’s warmer they go over Aerostich cotton riding shorts…which we sew right here, too. The new Utility Pants fit like the AD1's, and have all the function, protection and styling of those, but without the full-length side-zips, belt, or reflective on the leg adjustment tabs. You can slip them on and wear them all day, whether logging hundreds of miles or just riding across town to run errands. Remove the TF3 kneepads and these super-tough pants are practical as everyday off-bike wear, too.
MMM Product Review: Aerostich Darien Jacket and Pants
I'm getting gas in Montana. It's only 10AM, but the temperate has ripped past 95oF and is still climbing. It will top 105oF before sunset. The moment I get off of the bike, I pull off my gloves, helmet, and Darien jacket. A couple on a Harley laugh at me and the guy asks me, "Don't you get hot in that gear?" Neither of the two wore helmets and their riding gear consisted of leather vests over tee-shirts, jeans, designer boots, and bandanas.
"I'm fine, as long as I'm moving," I said.
"Seems like a lot of clothing on a hot summer day. Couldn't you get by in something a little more comfortable?" the lady says.
"I don't believe in magic," is the only reply I can think of.
They wandered away, probably confused by my response. It's the truth, though. I don't carry a rabbit's foot, a crucifix, a picture of Jimmy Carter in my wallet, or have a Suzuki tattoo on my butt. "The Darien and AD1 pants fit a little different…The Darien's fit like khaki 'Docker'-type chinos and dress pants. They have a straight waistband and a higher rise than jeans. The AD1's have a lower rise and a slightly conical waistband that is angled a bit lower in front. So these fit more like old-school denim jeans. I slightly prefer the AD1's fit."
