Product Description

The AD-1 is a fully seam taped, unlined, HT600 Denier Nylon three layer GORE-TEX® jeans-cut pant, with full length separating side zips. The outside zippers have full length inner and outer weather flaps to help the pants go on and off fast and keep rain and wind out.

Other details include: A diamond gusset in the crotch for greater sitting comfort; An inner gusset behind the front fly which improves water resistance; The knees have a greater bend around a larger radius (than the Darien pant knees), allowing more freedom of movement. The Scotchlight® reflective ankle tab loop strips are radial, for a natural and secure adjustment around the calf and lower leg. The front pockets have hook and loop secured cover flaps so items inside are secure. (And you won't lose your change or bike keys when the pants are laid over the back of a chair…). A vertical zippered cargo pocket is on top of the right thigh and a horizontal opening pocket to the top of the left thigh. Available in even waist sizes, 30–46 regular and long. An Aerostich Money Belt (#1854) is included with these pants. Black, Grey or Tan. Imported and Made in USA

If you are interested in suspenders (?) we recommend these #1815-1349. Several models and styles are available.

Righting a WrongReview by William
I ordered a pair of AD1 pants without velcro on the leg, and they promptly arrived WITH velcro on the leg. I contacted customer service, and they immediately apologized and put in an order for the correct pants. They told me to keep the original pants until the new ones arrived, and that they would include a pre-paid shipping label. Service like that is why people keep buying from companies like Aerostich. BTW, the pants look great, and I can't wait to give them a try on my upcoming Africa trip! (Posted on 7/27/12)
A women's point of view...Review by Laura
These are probably my 6th pair of pants, my first aerostich. I love them. I agree that they are cut shorter from waist to crotch -- than the Darien's that I tried - an absolute perfect fit for a women. I have put 5000 miles on them already and was only uncomfortable when the temps topped 90 degrees. At that temp, they are hot and sticky (or maybe that's me!). I had to have 2" taken off below the knee pads and I prefer the knee pads with the velcro and not in pockets. I have been in heavy rain and they have stayed dry for me. I love the easy on/off with the big zippers. And the money belt is an added bonus. Still waiting for them to soften up - guess I will just have to ride some more. (Posted on 6/17/12)
AD-1 pantsReview by Waltsolid
Love my new AD-1 pants! It took a little time to get the pads where I want them but now they are great! The size is perfect and I'm looking forward to wearing them in the rain, but I live in SoCal so it will be awhile. They were a little stiff initially but have softened up and are really
comfortable! I highly recommend them.

Great OverpantsReview by Scott
I gave these pants their initial test during a recent Houston to Minneapolis round trip, and I think they're great. Not only are they well constructed, they're well engineered as well. There is plenty of adjustability for size, and the pockets are large and secure. They held up to the chilly Iowa and Minnesota crosswinds just fine, and weren't uncomfortable in the Arkansas and Texas heat. It would be nice to have some heat resistant material on the inside bottom of each leg, and given that the design has evolved over time, I wouldn't be surprised to see this feature in some future model. The adjustable kneepad position is a nice touch.

One small nit to pick, and that is neither the print catalog nor the website mentions that the pants have the velcro in place for attachment of the hip pads. When I received the pants, I immediately noticed this and ordered the pads. The nice customer service folks were accommodating enough to send them without charging me for shipping.

Nice job, Aerostich. (Posted on 6/1/12)
Short waistedReview by Truant
Love the pants, love the features. I've been a devoted Stitch guy for several years. The only issue with these pants in my opinion is that they don't fit as well if you are relatively tall and/or long waisted. I think they could display them over a standard pair of jeans to show how far below they belt line they are going to fit. That way a customer could make a better initial buying decision. I tried two different sizes before discovering the Dariens were the only ones that would fit me correctly.

In my perfect world, you would be able to order either design with a high or low cut waist. (Posted on 5/24/12)
AD1 PantsReview by Mark
Well, after reading all the reviews on AEROSTICH products,I decided on the AD.1. pants and so far I am very pleased with them,I have to say I normally wear a 32 or 34 w in most jeans and I had to send back 2 pairs of AD.1's but the 36r fits pretty good,a little short from crotch to waist ,the quality on these was worth it,they appear very well made and look like they will hold up for a long time,a bit stiff but are softening up with regular use, they may be warm in hot weather, but time will tell.I have a pair of vented pants (wont mention name) the inner mesh type lining and straps to hold the rain liner in have already been fixed and sewn many times,in 1 season of riding (18,000 miles) and they were not much cheaper than these.Overall so far very pleased,I will put them to the test this year for sure as I am heading to Alaska & Jasper/Banff N.P's for the month of July!! A+++. I will give another review during the warmer summer months in the heat and after the long journey to the Great White North!! (Posted on 5/14/12)
Best pants ever!Review by manuel
I purchased the AD1s after weeks of reviewing other options. And I am glad I did, these pants are GREAT! I am 6ft with a 33in inseam and 34 inch waist, I ordered the 34L and they fit fantastic like they were tailored for me. The quality is very good, far better than all the others I looked at. Have not had them in the rain yet but i am sure they will perform well. Also they are not "slippery" on the bike seat like other pants are.....I love them, money well spent. Thanks Aerostich. AD 1 pantsReview by Harold
I've only worn them a couple of times, but the fit & quality are great. Very comfortable. The only negative is that when riding they (pant legs) slide up. I hope that they keep the rain from going down my boots, we'll see when it gets wet. (Posted on 4/7/12)
Not Right For MeReview by M3Arch
While of Aero quality in construction, I found these pants very long and really disliked the knee pads attached by velcro. Not being in pockets like other Aero pants, I consistently knocked them out of position when putting on the pants. I also noticed that these pants have a lower rise from crotch to waist than other Aero pants I've owned. All in all, a really handsome pair of pants that just didn't fit me well enough and with some questionable details like the knee pad attachment. I've returned them for a refund. (Posted on 4/3/12)

Gear: Fashion and Style vs. Equipment

There’s a lot of ‘noise’ in the rider-gear market space the Aerostich Darien jacket occupies, about how ‘new and improved’ similar jackets are. Other companies making these kinds of jackets restyle them and revise them every year or two, telling riders that if three zippers is good, six or seven zippers is better.

What all the ‘noise’ amounts to is fashion and style being presented in the guise of technology which supposedly is rapidly ever-advancing in this area. Except armored waterproof textile jackets are not the same kind of technology as computers, or even motorcycles. Seven zippers are not better than three, if only three are functionally needed. What counts is ease of use, durability, fit and function. The pioneering of this type of gear was done by us twenty and thirty years ago. (Combining lightweight breathable-waterproof highly abrasion-resistant synthetic fabrics, seam-sealing, ergonomically more useful vents and pockets, reflective materials and energy-absorbing foams and plastics.)

Since then, just like added decorative stitching on branded ‘designer’ jeans turns a pair of useful, comfortable and durable work pants like Levi’s 501’s into a fashion, all the noise about new tech in jackets like the Darien is mostly fashion BS masquerading as technological improvements. It’s not real.

Classic black leather ‘zipper’ biker jackets have been popular world-wide for many decades. There are versions at many price points and in some circles this jacket has become a fashion cliché having little to do with actually riding a motorcycle. But for many riders it remains a great equipment choice that has changed only very slightly over the years — because it works so well. You’ll find the original versions of these jackets at Langlitz, Shott and several other pioneering leather companies. Similarly, you’ll find the original British waxed cotton Belstaff and Barbour rider’s jackets and pants still being produced in their original patterns because they remain excellent functional rider’s gear.

The ‘latest-greatest’ is usually more style and fashion based, and original equipment is nearly always more utility-tool based. It does not change from year to year any more than Levi’s 501’s. Many riders are unlikely to admit they are buying ever-changing fashion and style when they believe they are getting some kind of improved technology, but that is a truth. None of the regularly restyled ‘teched-out’ sportswear for riders comes in as many closely-spaced sizes as the Darien does, and none is as functional and equipment-y as a Darien.

The Aerostich Darien is the original advanced technology breathable-waterproof impact-armored synthetic (nylon) textile rider’s gear, and just like the above-mentioned other examples of specialized rider’s clothing, it is similarly more equipment than fashion. For historical reasons.

Dariens are available ‘off-the-rack’ in eleven closely-spaced graded sizes and six colors. Complete repair service and several optional fit alterations insure years of superior service.

"The Darien and AD1 pants fit a little different…The Darien's fit like khaki 'Docker'-type chinos and dress pants. They have a straight waistband and a higher rise than jeans. The AD1's have a lower rise and a slightly conical waistband that is angled a bit lower in front. So these fit more like old-school denim jeans. I slightly prefer the AD1's fit."
