Mr. Subjective on Insulated Elkskin Roper Gloves

The Insulated Elk Ropers are different than every other winter riding glove on the market. They are not the bulky thick common cold weather glove ski/snowmobile type glove made in Asia, with a textile and cowhide outer and a fleece inner. They are based on the Elk Ropers (our most popular glove) but feature a knit merino wool lining. The gauntlet section is lined with a slippery nylon knit so it's easier to rotate one's wrists a little without also twisting the sleeve of one's jacket. Which is what happens with unlined deer and elk leather gauntlets.

There is a lot of nuance in this glove. In addition to the thumb visor squeegee, there's a windproof fabric across the back of the hand and fingers positioned between the outer leather and the inner merino wool knit. Farther back, the gauntlet tapers out wider than most cold weather gloves, helping it go over sleeves easer. The gauntlet and wrist have Velcro tab/strap closures that are ergonomically reversed for faster easier off-and-on adjustment. The knuckle pad is made of TF 3 (same as our impact armor)... Continue

Just Right

Review by Rainman on 4/16/12

Live in California...Ideal for night riding (low to mid 40's). I am a 5'7" ordered gloves 1 size over, as many colleges subjected. That worked out very nicely. I was wearing leather jacked and thick hoody. Gauntlet covered me fine but if I was wearing cold weather gear the gauntlet may be a bit small. Quality craftsmanship. Turned around and purchased the "roper" glove for spring.

Nice Gloves

Review by Chad on 4/5/12

Good gloves, nice warmth at least down to about 30 with heated grips. Had to order 1.5 sizes larger. Still rather tight but working them in.

SMALL

Review by Staush on 2/7/12

Ordered a pair 1/2 size larger than measured. Too small so returned for one size larger than measured, still pretty tight but am hoping they will stretch a little. Great looking and well made glove but the sizing just isn't right.

Sweet and Smooth

Review by Proaddy on 1/5/12

I really like these gloves, they are definitely "old school", as compared to my BMW Pro Winter 2 gloves. Both have about the same warming properties, and the beemers are waterproof. But I do like the Aero's, I also use them for cold weather dog handling; they're tough and flexible and it helps to break them in. By all means, get them one size larger as recommended.

Too Small

Review by Eratosthenes on 12/29/11

Too small. I had to return the gloves that were one size larger than the chart, and get a size 1 1/2 size larger. Also, on both pairs, I noticed that it was a bit difficult getting my thumb into the right glove. I had to work my thumb in through the insulation. I had thought it was just a quirk with the first pair, but I was wrong.

Beautiful Glove

Review by prodaddy on 12/22/11

Nice gloves, really great look and feel. Had no problem getting them over jackt cuff and keeping them there. Must admit, if you are looking for warmth in the 30degree range, forget it, best go 12v heated, but other than that I'd recommend them. Be sure you order them one size larger as the ad says, they break in nicely...

Good glove

Review by Jiri on 12/18/11

High quality glove, made in US, warm. As mentioned in other reviews, if you're borderline, get the larger size. I commute in Denver year around, they get me through the first 20 minutes at 22F, no heated grips. Winters in Colorado tend to be cold but with the low relative humidity these do better job than any other winter gloves I have had. Riding in around 32F is reasonably comfortable. One day I rode at 18F with 70% humidity (about -10F windchill at 70+ mph), stopping at my favorite coffee shop after 20 minutes was pretty much mandatory to avoid frostbite. Own them for about 3 weeks now, seem to be very high quality, nice and soft. I am curious to see how much water they soak up in the first rain. Likely will get the ropers for summer. One con - the palm of my throttle hand still seems to 'accumulate' excess leather creases, curiously the left glove doesn't do it.

My Favorite Winter Glove

Review by graham on 12/17/11

These gloves are pretty near perfect: warm enough to keep me riding w/o heated grips into the 40s (I do have handguards) and not so bulky that you can't feel. I'd recommend them to anyone.

Crashworthy

Review by John on 12/16/11

I had a get off the other day. I wasn't wearing my "Stich, of course. I save that for days in which I don't crash. But I did have the Elkskins on. My hands were unscathed, and the gloves, which certainly show signs of road rash, did not wear through at any point. I don't think I'll have to replace them. Which is more that I can say for the rest of what I was wearing, not to mention a layer or two of epidermis.

Nice Gloves - Gauntlets too small - returned

Review by Bob on 12/6/11

Very nice gloves, but like other reviews state, the gauntlet is waay too small. Wouldn't fit over the cuffes of my leather jacket. I returned them , but will order a pair without the gaunlets in the Spring.
