May 2000 - riding to work on my then 3 week old CBR929 in the right lane on a 6 lane major highway. Older woman in a Camry slowed down to between 30 and 40 mph in the far left lane and darted across all lanes of traffic to make the exit ramp that was right next to me. The ensuing collision totaled the bike, incapacitated the car, and almost gave the woman a heart attack since she thought she'd killed me. I narrowly missed hitting the car with my body and instead took a hard hit to my left hip as I hit the pavement and then slid for over 150 feet down the highway frantically waving at the traffic behind me to stop and not run me over.
The guy who called 911 couldn't believe I was alive and when we started checking me for blood or broken bones and I had neither, he was simply in awe. The tow truck driver gave me a ride to the tow facility. My father picked me up on his Valkyrie and brought me home where I got on my '97 VFR and went back to work - I didn't even have to change the clothes I was wearing.
Due to the damage my RoadCrafter received, it was quite obvious that had I not been wearing it I would have lost my left leg that day, it had gotten caught under my and took the brunt of the asphalt shredding.
The day of that accident I ordered two things - a replacement 929 and a replacement RoadCrafter - both were worth every penny. (Posted on 4/28/10)
I purchased my Roadcrafter shortly after 5 years ago and I could not be happier. I have worn the suit commuting to work, daily fun rides and week long trips. I have worn the suit in some serious downpours without complaint. Occasionally I have experienced dampness in the crotch area but believe that this is caused by water pooling in the crotch area of the seat. This however would not cause me to not recommend the suit as it has never been a significant amount.
I've heard other's mention heat, and it's a common question when wearing one. I have ridden in 90+ degree days regularly and as long as I'm not in stop and go traffic, I don't have an issue.
The Roadcrafter really provides maximum riding ability by allowing me to wear whatever I need to wear underneath, shorts, khakis or jeans, thus I ride more. I recommend it without hesitation. (Posted on 4/18/10)
I've owned 2 1/2 Roadcrafter riding suits over the last 20 years or so. The first one I, ahem, outgrew. I sold it through the BMWMOA website for about $100 less than I paid for it years earlier.
My second RC suit was another two-piece. I was wearing it when I had the only serious bike accident of my 45+ year riding career. In a wreck that could have killed me, I got off with a broken collar bone and four broken ribs. (Still hurts to think about breathing.) My RC suit -- and my BMW helmet -- saved my life. The EMS guy cut my jacket off, and when I got better I ordered another RC jacket to match the pants.
My third suit is a one-piece, and -- for touring -- I think I like it the best of all. I've ridden all day in the rain on my GS and stayed dry and comfy.
For long-distance riding it's all I'll ever need. My suits have all been the silver/grey color with black ballistics. It's a good choice for wear and not showing dirt, and not nearly as hot as a darker color would be.
I do find the RC suits a little warm much above 75 deg. F, but I'm thinking of wearing running shorts under my RC on this summer's tour to northeastern Canada. Bet that does the trick.
My only other piece of advice is to ride through Duluth on your next trip, and let Andy's staff measure you for the RC suit of your choice. They've got 'em in all sizes & colors to try on, and by the time you get home (well, if you're on a long trip), it'll be there waiting for you.

Is it dry?
Bought my Roadcrafter this summer and got wet by the first rain I encountered. Granted it was a torrential downpour and I was stuck in slow moving traffic with stop lights along the way. It was sort of like jumping in a pool; that was this summer. Since then, I have been using the one piece daily with great success at staying dry. My commute is 45 miles each way and I have ridden during some pretty good rains and a couple weeks ago, I even rode to work during the Nor’easter that blew through Virginia. I am happy to report that my Roadcrafter has kept me dry ever since that first rain. I am happy with this product.
How’s the fit?
I am 6 foot tall with a 33” inseam; I have a 40” waist and weigh 240 lbs. I bought a size 50 Regular (without alterations). I find it feels huge off the bike and a bit poofy in the torso area. However, I bought it slightly large to allow for heated liner or some layering. Once on the bike the knee armor moves into place vice hanging at my shins. The suit is a bit stiff when new but is starting to soften up some. I wear it on both my Concours 1400 and my HD Ultra Classic. The material is a bit rough on clear coat paint so protection is needed where ever the suit might rub on paint.
Is it cool in summer and warm in winter?
During the summer in VA at 90 degrees with all venting options open, sweat will line the suit…under 85 degrees comfortable while moving….traffic is another issue.
Fall temperature….shorts and tee shirt down to 55 degrees.
Winter…well hasn’t come yet but with heated liner and heated gloves the suit is comfortable down to 29 degrees (so far that is as cold as it has gotten).
I am thinking about ordering another suit in a 48 Regular for my fair weather riding…to reduce the extra bulk I have in the 50 R.

I've had my suit since around 2001 I think and unless things have changed since then I don't understand how "got wet" actually got wet. I rode mine non-stop from Dallas to Toronto and I swear a storm system must have been following me the whole way because it poured 15 out of the 22hrs I rode. And nowhere during the trip did I get wet at all. I have nothing but praise for this suit. - Dan (Posted on 11/28/09)
I've had mine for 2 years now. It is in exactly the same shape as when I bought it. Stays warm in the winter, cool in the summer. I use the hi-viz yellow and it has saved my hide on more than one day. Be prepared for more than a few 'fireman' comments in the store etc. It ironically doesn't get old....
I can honestly say this is the last honest company out there. They supply high quality items at good prices.
Also, for those of you reading the comments regarding rain entering the roadcrafter, ugh, that is what the waterproofing chemicals for sale are for. The suit does fine without any treatment in <2 hours in moderate rain. Beyond that just waterproof it--- no big deal. (Posted on 10/31/09)
I was playing chicken on Ebay by entering low ball bids that I was positive would not win. I bid one dollar higher than the staring bid. About a week later I get an email stating "You have won the auction!" What auction I asked and come to find out I'm the new-to-me owner of a two year old Hi-Viz Roadcrafter with about 8000 miles on it. The previous owner had crashed wearing this suit leaving streaks of embedded asphalt in the ballistics on the right side from the shoulder down to the ankle. An email from
Aerostich Customer Service suggested Dawn dishwashing liquid which worked very well to remove the stains but took a long, long time to rinse out.
The last 3 years I have been wearing a Fieldsheer Highlander II and the only similarity between the two suits is they are both made of textile and use two main zippers. Otherwise there is no comparison in the quality of the materials and the construction of the suits. While waitng for the suit to arrive I ordered a pair of the heavier duty hip pads. They make it a little more difficult to get my leg over the bike but I know from experience the importance of hip protection and being the old (55) fart that I am I don't heal as quick as I used to. The suit came with a Bohn Carbon-Kevlar back pad that velcrode right into the back. I have put about 800 miles on the suit so far and couldn't be happier with it. It has been leak free in a couple of frog strangling rain storms. (Posted on 10/23/09)
What a great product, the weather in the UK is good at the moment so I have not been able to try it out as yet but I'm sure it will change soon :(
The only issue I have is the legs are to long, does anyone know sowhere in the UK that can alter these suits?
15 seconds to get off, bit slow these days and I keep doing the zip down instead of up from the bottom of the left leg.
Going to sell my Rukka Armax as this is so damn good.
I just completed a 30 day, 10,000 mile cross country trip. Started everyday out in my Roadcrafter suit. If the temps stayed under 80, I left it on and was very comfortable. If it got much warmer, I took it off and bungeed it on top of my duffle bags. We only had two days of rain and the suit soaked me both times. Water got in somewhere around my midsection?? Cuffs were tight, neck was tight, all zippers fully up and velcro fully engaged but still got soaking wet. Say another rider in Montana, he asked about my suit and before I could tell him about my rain issues he said he had spoken to many folks who loved their Roadcrafters except for the this issue with rain. Not sure what I am going to take with me on my trip from Philly to Alaska next summer??? (Posted on 10/12/09)
