The R-3 (Roadcrafter 3) is the third-generation one piece Aerostich suit. It is 100% waterproof and unlined for maximum airflow, yet slips quickly and easily over your street clothes. Its full-length waterproof zipper entry system is fast, and it doesn’t flutter or flap in the wind. Without a lining it wears cooler, and with seam-sealed rainproof zippers you’ll also stay completely dry, even during the wettest conditions.

Each R-3 takes more than an hour longer to manufacture than previous Roadcrafters, but it’s worth it. You’ll enjoy higher levels of performance, comfort, and protection on every ride. And like its predecessor Roadcrafters, the R-3 is constructed of Aerostich’s exclusive American-made mil-spec 500d Cordura® GORE-TEX® fabric. It’s a strong, long-lasting and highly abrasion-resistant material ideal for this use. (Made-in-USA military gear is the other stuff to have this.)

For increased protection there’s a double layer of this fabric across the seat, and added 1000d abrasion-resistant layers covering the vital elbow/shoulder/knee areas. Beneath each of these is a superior energy absorbing system utilizing removable, oversized TF impact armor. Each armor attachment point is adjustable to allow fit to be fine-tuned for comfort and ensure it stays in place for best protection. Separately available hip, spine and chest armor options further increase the R-3’s capabilities.

With its oversize two-slider underarm vents, a two-slider back vent and magnetic clasps to hold open the fold-down dual-height collar, you ride cool and protected at the same time. As temps drop and when precipitation comes you’ll remain cozy and dry, too, because the adjustable Ultrasuede collar fits comfortably around your neck, even with varying base-layers.

Additional features include flap covered hip-side water resistant zippers for fast access to your street pants, a hidden pass-thru port for an electric liner power cord, nine strategically placed everyday-useful pockets, a mini-carabiner helmet holder at the upper chest pocket, a highly water-resistant inner wallet/phone/iPod pocket, fit-adjustable ankle and wrist tabs, articulated knees, fit-adjustable waist tabs and an integrated stretch panel across the lower back. There’s also oversize 3M Scotchlite® reflective areas across the back, chest and ankles to enhance conspicuity in low light conditions.

Overall length* difference is 1 14".

  • Example - 42 (S, R or L) suit is 1 14" longer (taller) overall than a size 40 (S, R or L) suit.

Short to Regular:

Overall length* difference is 3".

  • Example - A 42S is 3" shorter than a 42R.
  • Leg length difference is +1" above & +12" below the knee. The remaining 1 12" is in the Torso.
  • Sleeve difference is 1 14", shoulder to wrist.

Regular to Tall:

Overall length* difference is 2".

  • Example - A 42L is 2" longer (taller) than a 42R.
  • Leg length difference is +12" above knee & +12" below the knee. The remaining 1" is in the Torso.
  • Sleeve difference is 1".

* Overall length = collar to ankle

We can adjust the sleeve lengths, elbow armor position, leg length, knee armor position, and many other variables, but we cannot change the body/torso length. For semi-custom fitted garments, we start with the body/torso size that is the closest and change the arms and legs as needed.

A great fit is critical to the long-term enjoyment and satisfaction of any garment. This is something we do better than anyone else with graded off the rack sizes. There are about 32 standard R-3 sizes vs. about 8 with typical S, M, L, XL grading. If the crotch in an R-3 is slightly binding, the garment will never have a chance to become your 'go to' riding gear, and I'd like it to have that chance.

One piece coveralls are the best gear for day-to-day short-hop utility riding because they work as a complete protection system all in one garment. But like mechanic's and trade-worker's coveralls, for comfort the crotch needs to be low enough to never bind.

Yes, it IS rainproof.Review by ran
I've had my R3 for about two months, it replaced my twenty-year-old Roadcrafter that was in decent shape, but I wanted to see if the R3 was more rain-proof than the old R1.

This past weekend I rode to Death Valley from Richmond, CA during one of the strongest storms in many years, and I was riding in rain for several hundred miles. I am happy to report that the R3 kept me dry.

The quibbles: you pay over $1K for the suit, and some of the zippers have zipper pulls, and other zippers don't. Customer Service sent me free zipper pulls when I called them about it, but for the price, all the zippers should have the handy pulls. And IMO there should be two "ports" for heated gear cables; my heated vest has the power cable on the right side, so I have to wear the vest inside-out to use the suit's left-side cable port. Not a big deal.

Also, I had to call Customer Service to find out the magic secret to actually open and USE the well-hidden cable port.

But, yes, it IS rainproof, and I was very glad to find that out.

Should have made this purchase two jackets and a pair of riding pants ago. If you are seriously considering a one piece don't waste any more of your valuable time! I purchased this using the sizing chart and the online sizing system (you must be honest with yourself to get the sizing right).

The suit arrived mid Jan, I tried it on with my normal riding layers and then with my heated suit as well. I have not worn any of my other gear at all. The suits fits perfectly. Did I say it fits perfectly?

My suit arrived nearly two weeks ago; I love it. As former military, professional sailmaker and currently a Master Ducati technician I value quality, ease of use and engineering which ultimately leads to function.
Once zipped up the feeling of security is comparable to my full leather but with no pockets and way easier to get into. The gear just makes me want to get on my Gran Canyon and go someplace i’ve never been. Once I get a break from the boss at Houston Superbikes that’s what I intend to do. My exposure to customers is an everyday occurrence and the R3 is an interesting talking point…even the Dianese rep admitted there is nothing better; he also said they’re pricey and coming from a bloke who administers that line his words carry some weight. As a wise Southern Belle said to me “Buy once, cry once.”
I really do appreciate what y’all have done and my sailmakers eye can’t find fault with construction.
Thanks for the work and please convey my thanks to all involved……especially the ones sitting behind machines sewing and cutting……full marks!

Have I Told You How Much I Love My Aerostitch Suit?Review by Dave St.
41 miles each way. That's my commute here in Seattle. It includes a lot of 70mph traffic on I-90, a mountain pass and Expert Levels of congestion. I could never talk myself into year round commuting until I Finally invested in my R3 one-piece (in Hi-Viz of course!) suit. After one year with it the only time I don't commute on the bike is when the temps drop enough for black ice to form. (Seriously, that is some scary stuff!)

In the dark, in the rain, in the traffic I am there. Warm with my heated jacket set at 2 and on the worse days a neck gaiter. The R1200GSA's heated grips keeping my digits toasty.

Life is good when you ride more.

Two points to consider:
1.) Hi-Viz shows dirt the first day you ride it. Just consider it a proper patina.

2.) If you are self conscious about walking around in a big one piece suit - GET OVER IT! Just enjoy the ride.

Oh, and one more thing, the custom alterations they offer can truly tailor your suit to your physique and make the suit just that much more comfy.

I've had the R3 for a bit over a year now; it replaced my 12 year old Roadcrafter that's perfectly serviceable, but getting tight on an older body. First off, overall, I like the suit and it's lived up to the quality of its predecessor so far. I just returned from a 5900 mile road trip in the heat and it did well (soaking undergarments for evaporative cooling).

The main problem I'm finding with the suit lies with the collar magnets and the little pockets that hold them (the ones on the inside of the suit). Within a few months of getting the suit, the right collar pocket showed signs of the edges coming unglued; it eventually fell off. It was replaced when I installed the upgraded zipper pull kit; the replacement is already peeling back at the corners after only a month. It's a bit disappointing that a $1200 suit doesn't have a better solution and it makes me wonder if the suit will last as long as my class Roadcrafter has. (Posted on 8/10/16)

This isn't so much of a review; it’s mostly my opinions. After about a month of riding........

1) I haven't ridden any more than normal as their Ride More Guarantee states. Being fair to them, I am already a year-round rider and it would be somewhat difficult and/or impractical to ride much more.

2) The suit is VERY WELL BUILT and there is an apparent level of craftsmanship that goes into this thing. The attention to detail is simply amazing.

3) I do agree with another reviewer. I thought the wait time was a bit excessive and they may lose some business because of that. After finding out there would be a 3 month wait (and that’s about how long it was), I almost said “Forget this” and went elsewhere. The other side of that is you are getting a handmade quality USA product. I’m glad I waited.

4) Customer Service; I can’t say enough good things about them. They seriously put the Service in Customer Service!

5) Their sizing chart was dead on accurate for me. To hedge my bets, I also took my measurements and sent them in for their review. They confirmed what the sizing chart listed. The suit fits like a glove.

6) Yes, the suit is stiff, but after only a month of riding, it has loosened up nicely. It never caused me any discomfort and I think it will only get better with time.

7) I’m not entirely sold on the “Helmet Holder” as a helmet holder, but it makes a great place to hang you key(s) when they’re not in the bike.

8) I haven't mastered putting it on in 20 seconds yet. I can get it down to about 30 seconds with socks only. With a motorcycle boot (US 11 ½) it takes me a bit longer. I wish that right foot opening was just a bit larger.

9) If you're wearing something with a hood, it's difficult to keep the hood on the inside while putting the suit on as the suit slides up your back while you're getting into it.

10) It's nice only having to deal with 2 zippers instead of 6. I came from a Kevlar mesh 2-piece with liners that had 6 total zippers and a lot of Velcro.

11) So far, it is at least 3 hour waterproof.

12) If I ride with the suit partially unzipped, the right side collar magnet sticks to my flip-up helmet. This is due to the metal latching mechanism for the chin bar. It won’t or shouldn’t be an issue with non-modular helmets. This is only a slight annoyance and I could easily remove the magnets if I really wanted.

13) With the back/armpit vents open and the suit partially unzipped, the suit does vent very well. I'm a cool weather rider who typically sets my upper limit at about 80 degrees. On a few 80 degree days, I did okay; still a little bit too warm for me, but okay. I can ride comfortably at 50 degrees with only a tee shirt and hoodie under the suit. I think when Pacific Northwest winter rolls around and temperatures start getting down into the 40’s & 30’s, simply adding a good wool sweater or fleece will do the job.

14) I don’t know if it’s covered in the owner’s manual (because what self-respecting man actually reads those things), but the little hang up loop is on the outside instead of the inside like most things. I hate when a co-worker has to point out the obvious.

15) I did get the competition back armor and the hip armor. They seem like they’ll both do the job if ever called upon. The back armor makes me look like a Rhodesian Ridgeback (not a bad thing) and the hip armor makes me look fat (maybe that’s got something to do with being 6” to short for my ideal weight).

16) All in all, I’m extremely pleased with the purchase. Yes it’s expensive, but no more so than other quality gear on the market. You’re buying something to keep you comfortable and more importantly…..SAFE in many different conditions. What’s that worth?

Have had the suit for a week. 1200 km of riding, mostly mild weather with one 20 minute deluge. I'm very happy with its comfort level (light, easy to move, easy to get on and off ). It's kept me cool and warm when required. The deluge would have left me soaked within minutes old gear, but only got the slightest dampn we on my butt with this suit (Posted on 6/23/16)

Got the suit early in winter & have just started using it. When I realized i was going to need a way to express how perfectly conceived it is, I started trying to think of other perfect inventions, things that couldn't really be improved. The one that keeps coming to mind is the Swing-Away can opener. That's how good this suit is. It just isn't for opening cans. (Posted on 5/14/16)

I've been wanting a Roadcrafter for about 3 years now. I requested a catalog back in 2013 and it's been on my nightstand and I've probably looked through it just about weekly ever since. Due to being short on funds I ended up ordering other motogear. I try to commute on my bike as often as possible, it puts me in a good mood and the gas mileage is better but I've always had to skip rainy days and drive the car. Despite most of my other gear having zip in rain liners, I always ended up wet and sweaty, plus I my gear would be completely soaked full of water and it took forever to zip in the liners and meant carry extra gear. So I always hoped I'd own a Roadcrafter and could avoid all my issues. Finally I decided I couldn't deal with my other gear letting me down anymore and purchased an R3, I got it for a great price on Holiday sale but I gladly would have paid full price.

Winter is finally over and the fear of icy roads gone and I've finally been able to wear the R3 for some commutes (50 miles one way). This week was my first week hitting rain. A couple light showers and one good heavy storm and I am absolutely in love. I rode through a heavy downpour for about 30 minutes and came away with a damp collar and a tiny little damp spot on my pants (I attribute this to the zipper flap getting pushed to the side and my cotton pants wicking moisture through the zipper). I didn't feel clammy under the suit like I usually do with a plastic liner, it breathed well. I stayed warm, dry and comfortable. The suit was soaked but didn't feel water logged and I hung it up at home and it probably dried out in a couple hours. My previous gear sometimes took days to dry.

I'm sold, I can't imagine using any other suit for riding or commuting. (Posted on 3/17/16)

What is the Difference Between a Roadcrafter Classic and an R‑3?

The RC Classic is the original Aerostich suit, updated and refined. It’s fully lined and was created to be an armored coverall constructed along the lines of a leather rider’s suit but in textiles. For this reason (the ‘leather’s’ way it is put together) it isn’t perfectly waterproof. It is pretty good, using about 30 meters of waterproof seam-sealing tape per garment, and modern waterproof zippers everywhere, but since its original and primary focus was commuting and ease-of-use, RC Classic can leak slightly in areas which are not seam-tapeable.

In most rain situations this suit is good for about 30 minutes on an unfaired bike. Then it may leak a little in the crotch because water pools when sitting (depending on how the fabric folds) and may drip through the zipper-attaching stitch holes. Riders with fairings and windshields often think it is totally waterproof even after all-day rain rides. This suit has been in production for over thirty years, which is fifteen years before the Gore-Tex company introduced waterproofness certification programs, so it’s grandfathered. It’s still great gear, still popular, and works and wears very well in almost all situations.

The R-3 is the third-generation Aerostich one piece coverall. It’s unlined like a lot of today’s most technical and lightweight waterproof outdoor gear, and it does pass the rigorous certification for rainwear. We sometimes think of it as an armored and highly abrasion-resistant rain suit. Its impact armor is attached to the inside with adhesively bonded hook-and-loop. This suit wears slightly cooler in really hot conditions absent a separate inner lining. There are numerous other small refinements the RC Classic does not have.

In summary, the RC Classic has become an actual classic just as ‘Levi’s 501’ denim jeans and many other long-popular products. Many riders like it exactly the way it is. The R-3 waterproof one piece suit is what we make today for the same intended applications, but incorporating the technology and experience we now have.

How to Get a Functional, Comfortable One-Piece Suit Fit:

Start with your height and body length…For a person’s given overall height, some will have longer-bodies-with-shorter-legs, and others have shorter-bodies-with-longer-legs. After a suit is sewn and completed there is no simple or cost-effective way to then make the garment’s torso length (the distance from crotch to collar) shorter or longer. A few specialized alterations can help slightly (see 'ellipse' below), but they are imperfect Band-Aids.

Garage mechanics and others who wear coveralls for a living know a lowish crotch and baggy seat means they’ll be able to raise their arms upward fully and comfortably. When one does this arm-raising to horizontal, the entire torso section of a one-piece suit slides upwards about 1.5". The suit’s bulky shoulder impact armor move it that way. And when you lower your arms, the suit body area should slide back downward smoothly.

Aerostich gear is graded by chest size (38, 40, 42, 44, etc) and each is available in short (S), regular (R) and long (L) versions. If you are borderline height-wise, part-way between an ‘S’ and an ‘R’, go with the longer body length of the ‘R’. And if you are somewhere between an ‘R’ and an ‘L’, go with the longer body of the ‘L’. The extra body length in each size is about 1.3" greater. And if you ride a sport bike, or are an especially active rider and want maximum freedom-of-movement, a slightly longer body sometimes works and feels a bit better.

Leg and sleeve lengths should be adjusted as needed after your body/torso length has been determined. For a comfortable and correct fit with your raised arms out to your side horizontally (both at the same time), you should still have very slight room at the crotch.

The suit’s body, sleeve and leg diameters are exactly the same for each ‘S’, ‘R’ and ‘L’ version of a particular size. For example, the dimensions around your body of the 38S, 38L and 38R are identical. The circumferences are exactly the same.

A riding suit’s leg lengths are correct if, when standing normally, the hem breaks (wrinkles) slightly against the front of your riding boot just above the foot’s arch, and the top edge of the TF knee impact armor cup is positioned near the center of your kneecap. Then, as you sit on your bike, the hem will rise about 1.5” and the knee armor cup will slide upward and center itself over your bent knee.

A riding suit’s sleeves are the correct length if, when standing normally with your arms hanging loosely by your sides, they end about mid-way between your knuckles and your wrist, measured at the center back of your hand. The center of the TF impact armor elbow cup should also be centered on, or very slightly below, your elbow.

Specialized Motorcycle Configuration Considerations:

For comfort with low handle bars and higher positioned rear-set footrests, all one-piece riding suits will fit better with the ‘Extra Forward Rotated Sleeve’ alterations, and may also benefit from an ‘ellipse’ added to the center of the back. In addition, an ‘expanded knee’ alteration is available which provides slightly more space for knee armor when knees are bent more sharply.

For active off-road riding requiring maximum freedom-of-movement and upper-arm ease, underarm ‘V’ gussets may be added to increase upper sleeve diameter and provide extra room across upper chest and shoulder areas.
