By Chris Scott (who actually was the inventor of term “adventure motorcycling”).
Despite not having anything to do with motorcycles, this classic travelogue is a great read and offers insight and wisdom into how to travel, better and with more meaning and purpose. After losing both his wife and job on the same day, the author embarks on an unforgettable journey along the back roads of the United States, following the routes marked with blue on his old style Rand McNally atlas and discovering all of the wonders that 13,000 miles of rural America has to offer. A classic, masterpiece of travel writing filled with fun, unique and memorable stories and real-life characters. By William Lease Heat-Moon. 5.5”x8”, 448 pp.
This guide features 300 of the most beautifully scenic tours through virtually every kind of landscape. Mile-by-mile details and stunning photos of famous destinations as well as lesser-known back-roads rides too. A wonderful combination of regional knowledge, storytelling, full-color maps and images describe the scenery, history and points of interest along each route. Completely updated 4th Edition. Keep it on your coffee table for easy reference and inspiration, or use it to plan your next epic journey. Softbound, 5.3"Ă—8.42", 496 pp., color illus.
Here is a book about hard-core, non-stop, record-crushing, subversive, all-weather, bad-ass motorcycle endurance riders—and in particular the peeled-back story of John Ryan, a living legend motorcyclist made of resolve, discipline, toughness and brains. Along the road you’ll meet an impressive range of other extreme riding obsessives, and gain a deeply informed understanding of motorcycling. A captivating read, impossible to put down. By Melissa Holbrook Pierson. Hardbound, 5.5”×8.3”, 208 pp.
"As I entered the back door of the lobby in Jacksonville and aimed myself toward the dining room, my eye was drawn to some activity on the other side of the glass doors at the main entrance. The exact replica of John Ryan, distinctive Aerostich and all, was dismounting from a GS. But no, this was John, with his impossible I-have-done-what-few-mortal-men-can-do, so-what-are-you-looking-at? Bearing. He inclined his head to pull off a black helmet covered with stickers. I knew that one of them read, "If I have to understand don’t bother to explain," an inversion of the common dullard's claim "If I have to explain it you wouldn’t understand." A short time before I was falling backward onto an anonymous print bedspread in a riding-induced stupor in Florida, he had managed to get the engine to light up. It had leaked so much fuel over his left leg during the fifteen-hour ride, covering 929 miles, that the dining-room staff took aside a patron at the breakfast table where Ryan had just taken a seat and asked him to "kindly remove that man" from the room. Instead, Ryan reluctantly removed the suit and put it outside with the bike. - from The Man Who Would Stop at NothingHow about riding out your own back door for high adventure and long distances on just an average smallish bike and with some simple luggage and gear? Is it possible to travel unsupported and independently in such a manner? Yes, and the experience of traveling this way captures the most time-honored essences of motorcycling.
This book consists of 14 pages of summary text, with the balance arranged into appendices that cover such topics as food, improvised repairs, helpful resources for further information, useful websites, state-by-state listings of good roads, and bike-friendly hangouts.
Detailed examples of gear and its organization are based on real-life experience and offered as a starting point for your own trips. It fits readily in a pocket or tank bag and contains a distillation of experience, and information that will be a useful starting point for the beginning lightweight motorcycle tourist as well as a handy reference for an experienced rider. Saddle-stitched, 4"Ă—6", 84 pp., b/w illus.
