Husband Tracks

Husband Tracks

Guest post by Mrs. Subjective

I saw husband tracks
In the snow the other day,
Leading down a path
For his own getaway.

Those tracks of his
They show me his grit;
Being willing to ride in snow
Is a whole other kind of lit.

Preparing his bike
Takes work (and I’m sure some fun too),
From siping tires
To finding his groove.

He said to me once,
“The snow has to be just right.
Better to have snow on the ground
Than none in my sight.”

He’s true to his motto —
Ride to Work or work to ride,
These words to which
He will forever abide.

Mr. Subjective's Van Van

The Suzuki Van Van,
It’s his favorite winter bike
With big, wide tires
That’s what he likes.

All bundled up,
Facing the winter wind,
His helmet secure
And, I’m sure, quite a grin.

Do I worry? Do I fear?
Oh yes, but just a little bit,
For I know he is clothed with
The best gear one can get.

American-made —
A Roadcrafter Aerostich!
Equipment for riders
Straight from their pitch.

His one-piece zip-in suit
With padding galore
Guarantees him the chance to ride
More and more… and more.

Now you might think this is an ad,
But no — I’m just a little savvy
To include a rendition
Of my husband’s Duluth company.

Although I must say
Their products are quite stellar;
Many a hide
They’ve saved from the gutter.

But now back to the story
Of seeing husband tracks —
I knew that since he left,
He must also come back.

It was nearing dinner time
When my belly cried out,
So I texted him these words:
“How about some takeout?”

Pizza? Sure thing.
So I put the order in.
Away on his Van Van
He rode with a grin.

It wasn’t the first time
He managed a pizza on his bike,
But this time around
It was quite a different sight.

Pizza slide

Opening the box
Was quite the surprise —
Our perfect pepperoni pie
Slid in that two-point-four-mile ride.

Cheese off the slice,
Pepperonis scattered about,
I gave a little gasp
And then laughed out loud.

The way I look at it is this:
If riding makes him smile,
He should keep on keeping on
mile after mile.

If the only casualty
Is cheese off the slice,
Well, I think that’s a win —
’Cause it still tastes pretty nice.

So get out and ride!
Leave your tracks wherever you go,
Whether you decide to ride
In rain, sleet, sun… or God forbid, snow.

Not a pizza but how about a bunch of a dozen Mylar balloons for one anniversary or the 36" heart shaped balloon with a hole in the center that my arm went through for another important date for the one mile ride home from the store? Note at the top of the hill at the turn my bike, 1978 Triumph Bonneville made a specific sound as I down shifted for the final corner that my wife and riding partner, on her own bike and on my bike, heard everytime.

Yes the condition of the pavement is always a concern but the effort to manage it is really satisfying!! If one doesn’t ride when one can the result is a lessening of the joy that’s available to share. A husband’s tracks is testament to the closeness of the pair. Sharing is caring. 🤟😍
